“Η Μεσόγειος μετατρέπεται σε νεκροταφείο”

Έτσι, ωμά και ξεκάθαρα. Εμείς όμως, εδώ στην Ελλάδα, το ξέρουμε χρόνια τώρα. Χρόνια τώρα οι θάλασσές μας ξεβράζουν ανθρώπινα ναυάγια, πτώματα θαλασσοτσακισμένα σε ερημικές ακτές και ξερονήσια. Πέντε εδώ, τρείς εκεί, ένα παιδάκι παραπέρα. Χρειάστηκε όμως μια συγκλονιστική σε μέγεθος τραγωδία, στην Λαμπεντούσα, για να μπεί το πρόβλημα τόσο επιταχτικά και άμεσα. Μα άσχετα απο αριθμούς, ο θάνατος έστω και ενός ανθρώπου κάτω απο τέτοιες συνθήκες είναι απαράδεκτος σε έναν κόσμο που αυτο-θεωρείται πολιτισμένος. Και μιλάω φυσικά για την Ευρώπη που έχει σπρώξει το πρόβλημα κάτω απο το χαλί ή το φορτώνει στους ώμους άλλων και αρνείται να το κοιτάξει κατάματα.
Ο Γ.Γ. του ΟΗΕ εύχεται “μέτρα που θα αντιμετωπίζουν της βαθιές αιτίες (των ναυαγίων αυτών) και που θα επικεντρώνονται στην τρωτότητα και το σεβασμό των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων των μεταναστών”.
ΜΕΤΡΑ ΠΟΥ ΘΑ ΑΝΤΙΜΕΤΩΠΙΖΟΥΝ ΤΗΣ ΒΑΘΕΙΕΣ ΑΙΤΙΕΣ. Είναι άραγε έτοιμη η πολιτισμένη Ευρώπη -o πολιτισμένος κόσμος- για κάτι τέτοιο;

That’s a bold and clear statement. But we in Greece are well aware of it. Human wrecks have been washing up in our shores and tiny uninhabited islands for years. Five here three there, a child further down. But it took a shocking tragedy the size of the one in Lampedusa to put the problem urgently forward. Still, regardless of numbers, the death of even one human being under such circumstances should be unacceptable to a world that considers itself to be “civilized”. Of course, I am talking about Europe that so far prefers to push the problem under the carpet or put it on someone else’s shoulders.
In a statement, the UN Secretary General “…calls on the international community as a whole to take action to prevent such tragedies in the future, including measures that address their root causes and that places the vulnerability and human rights of migrants at the centre of the response.”
MEASURES THAT ADDRESS THEIR ROOT CAUSES. Is the civilized Europe -the civilized world- ready for such a thing? I wonder.
