10 Δεκεμβρίου 1522.  Με το ξημέρωμα οι Τούρκοι σηκώνουν μια λευκή σημαία στο καμπαναριό της Παναγίας της Ελεημονήτρας, απέναντι απο την Πύλη του Αγ. Αθανασίου, σημάδι πως θέλουν διαβουλεύσεις.

Λες και ξέραν τι είχε προηγηθεί, γιατί την προηγούμενη μέρα, 9 Δεκεμβρίου, ο Μέγας Μάγιστρος είχε συγκαλέσει το Συμβούλιο του Τάγματος όπου ενημερώθηκε για την άθλια αμυντική κατάσταση της πόλης: πυρομαχικά και τρόφιμα δεν υπάρχουν, τα τείχη έχουν κατρεύεσει σε πολλά σημεία, δεν υπάρχει μαχητής που να μην είναι πληγωμένος.  Ταυτόχρονα, αντιπροσωπεία τον Ροδιτών με τον επίσκοπο Κλήμη επι κεφαλής θα εκφράσουν τις ανησυχίες τους και θα προτείνουν πως ίσως θα ήταν καλύτερα η πόλη να παραδοθεί.

Η ζωηρές συζητήσεις θα καταλήξουν σε μονόδρομο: για να σωθούν Τάγμα και λαός απο ανώφελη καταστροφή, πρέπει να συνθηκολογήσουν.
Έτσι, σε απάντηση της λευκής Τούρκικης σημαίας, μια άλλη σηκώνεται ψηλά στους μύλους της Πύλης Κοσκινού.

Αρχίζει τότε το πήγαιν’ έλα ανάμεσα στα δυο στρατόπεδα.  Ο Σουλτάνος ανακοινώνει τους πολύ απλούς όρους του: άμεση παράδοση και άδεια στους Ιππότες να φύγουν.  Σε αντίθετη περίπτωση ισοπέδωση της Ρόδου και σφαγή.  Οι διαπραγματεύσεις θα κρατήσουν αρκετές μέρες μα το νερό έχει πια μπεί στ’ αυλάκι χωρίς επιστροφή.

And so, in response to the Turkish white flag another one is raised high on the windmills of the Koskinou gate.

Then begins the shuttle between the two camps.  The Sultan lays down his terms very simply and clearly: immediate surrender in exchange for permission to the knights to depart unharmed.  Otherwise, levelling of Rhodes and death to all by the sword.  Negotiations will continue for some days to come but they are on the road of no return.

The heated discussions will go down an one-way path: to save the Order and the people from needless destruction they must negotiate a settlement.

It is as if they knew what was taking place inside the city.  Because on the day before, December 10, the Grand Master had convened the Council of the Order.  There, he had been informed of of the desperate state of the defenses.  There was neither food nor ammunitions, the damage to the walls was irreparable, there was not a single man who was not wounded. At the same time, a delegation of the people of Rhodes headed by the Metropolitan Clement will express their worries and suggest that it might be better if the town surrendered.

December 10, 1522.  With the sunrise the Turks raise a white flag on the steeple of St. Mary, outside of St. Athanasius Gate, a sign that they want to parley.
