Πολιορκία της Ρόδου, Ιούνιος 1480. Οι
Τούρκοι δεν έχουν σταματήσει να πετροβολούν τον πύργο του Αη Νικόλα,
στην είσοδο του Μαντρακιού. Βδομάδες τώρα, τεράστιες πέτρινες μπάλες
πέφτουν πάνω του σαν τερατώδης χαλαζοθύελλα. Η δυτική πλευρά του πύργου έχει ισοπεδωθεί και οι υπερασπιστές του είναι πια ταμπουρωμένοι πίσω απο τα χαλάσματα.
Ξημερώματα της 9 Ιουνίου ένα πλήθος Τούρκικα πλοία κάθε είδους και μεγέθους φορτωμένα στρατό πλησιάζουν τον πύργο. Κάνοντας
διαβολεμένο θόρυβο με σάλπιγγες, νταούλια, γιγάντια τύμπανα και
αλαλαγμούς και κάτω απο απο τα πυρά του ίδιου του πύργου και των τειχών
της πόλης καταφέρνουν να αποβιβάσουν το φορτίο τους στα βράχια του Αη
Νικόλα.
Η μάχη κράτησε όλη την ημέρα και μέχρι τη νύχτα. Η
αυγή της 10 Ιουνίου 1480, σαν σήμερα πριν 533 χρόνια, θα βρεί τα βράχια
του πύργου και τη γύρω θάλασσα σπαρμένα με πτώματα και μπαϊράκια
Τούρκικα. Ο Μέγας Μάγιστρος ντ’ Ωμπουσόν θα πει απλά: “…οι άντρες μας κράτησαν τις θέσεις τους και ο ηττημένος εχθρός αποσύρθηκε…”.
Λένε πως εκείνη την ημέρα 600 Τούρκοι έχασαν τη ζωή τους.
Siege of Rhodes, June 1480. The Turks don’t look like they want to take a break. They are blasting the Fort of St. Nicholas, at the entrance of Mandraki harbor, with a shower of stones. For many weeks the giant balls of stone keep falling like a monstrous hailstorm. The western side of the Tower is reduced to rubble and its defenders take cover behind the ruins.
At dawn, on June 9, a flotilla of Turkish ships of all kinds and sizes loaded with troops approaches the Tower. With a hair raising din from kettle drums, trumpets and battle cries and under constant fire from the Tower and the city walls, the ships still manage to unload their fighting cargo on the rocks of St. Nicholas.
The ferocious battle
lasted the whole day and into the night. The day brake of June 10, a
day like today 533 years ago, will find the the sea and the rocks of the
Fort strewn with the grim remains of the battle: Turkish banners,
corpses, weapons, turbans and shining gear… Grand Master d’ Aubusson himself simply states that: …” our men tenaciously kept their posts until the beaten enemy retired…”.
It is said that 600 Turks lost their life in that battle.
