Τέτοιες μέρες του 1974, ο τόπος βούιζε απο φήμες. Είχε προηγηθεί μια
ραγδαία εξέλιξη γεγονότων… η εξέγερση του Πολιτεχνείου, η
ενδο-χουντική φαγωμάρα και η ανατροπή του Παπαδόπουλου απο τον Ιωαννίδη,
το χουντικής έμπνευσης πραξικόπημα κατά του Μακαρίου και τώρα η εισβολή
των Τούρκων στην Κύπρο. Τα ξένα ραδιόφωνα που κρυφακούγαμε, το BBC,
Deutsche Welle, η Μόσχα προανάγγελαν την πτώση της χούντας.
Όλοι τώρα είμαστε σε αναμονή, σήμερα, αύριο, μεθαύριο πέφτει το όρνιο. Το θέμα δεν ήταν “αν” μα “πότε”. Αν και ήταν φανερό πως κάτι δεν πήγαινε καλά, πως το χουντικό κράτος έχανε πια τον έλεγχο, παρ’ όλα αυτά η λογοκρισία σε όλα τα ΜΜΕ έντυπα και ηλεκτρονικά είχε ενταθεί και οι ειδήσεις κυκλοφορούσαν απο στόμα σε στόμα. Χαραχτηριστικό είναι πως δεν υπάρχει δημοσιευμένο σκίτσο μου που να σχολιάζει το πραξικόπημα του Σαμψών ή την Τούρκικη εισβολή. Ο στραγγαλισμός του τύπου ήταν απόλυτος.
Παραθέτω ένα σκίτσο μου έγινε λίγους μήνες αργότερα, όταν ο ρόλος των ΗΠΑ στην επιβολή της δικτατορίας στην Ελλάδα και την Τούρκικη εισβολή στην Κύπρο συζητιόταν πια ανοιχτά.

of July 1974. The air was buzzing with rumors. In recent months there
had been a quick succession of developments in Greece: the uprising of
the students in the Athens Polytechnic against the military
dictatorship, the overthrow of dictator Papadopoulos by another member
of the military junta, D. Ioannidis, the Athens inspired coup against
Archbishop Makarios and the subsequent invasion of Cyprus by Turkey.
Now, the foreign news we would listen secretly -BBC, Deutsche Welle,
Radio Moscow- were announcing the imminent fall of the Junta.
Everyone was on edge. Today, tomorrow, the day after, the hateful “bird” symbol of the dictatorship would fall. It was not a matter of “if”, but “when”. In spite of the fact that it had become obvious that the regime was gradually losing control still, censorship in all news media had been tightened and news would travel by word of mouth. It is characteristic there is no published cartoon of mine commenting either on the coup in Cyprus or the Turkish invasion. The stranglehold on the Press was very tight.
I present a cartoon published a few months later, when the role of the USA in the establishment of the military dictatorship in Greece and in the Turkish invasion of Cyprus could be finally openly discussed.
I give you Henry Kissinger.
