Η μάχη είναι σώμα με σώμα κι ενώ πολεμά ο ιππότης απο τις δέκα το πρωί και βράζει μέσα στην κονσέρβα του, εκεί κατα τις δύο το μεσημέρι τούρχεται να πάει προς νερού του. Ποιές είναι οι επιλογές του;

I think I’ve said it before. It is not surprising that being a Rhodian, surrounded by walls and battlements that seemed to be built by giants, I was fascinated since I was a kid by the Middle Ages. Being fascinated and interested in that period I always had a question.
I thought that, here, there is this man, a knight, clad in iron from head to toe something like a tin can. So, he goes to battle and battles at that time they usually started in the morning and lasted until the sun went down or there was no enemy standing on the field. The enemy of the knight in our parts would be some terrible Mohammedan, a Turk, Arab, Persian, Saracen. Fierce warriors, those Mohammedans, armed with damascened swords, the best of their time and beyond.
So, the battle is hand to hand and while our knight has been fighting since 10.00 in the morning and roasting in his tin can, around 2.00 in the afternoon or thereabouts he has to relieve his bladder. What would his choices be:
a. To try to control the need
b. To continue fighting and at the same time to relieve himself right there and then, making his shiny armor all wet.
c. To expose his relieving organ and to pee in the nearest tree. (No, no! How about that Turk with the scimitar?)
d. To tell the Turk to wait a couple of minutes until he has emptied his bladder and then resume the fight.
Well, as none of the above is a good idea you can imagine my problem. It took me years of head scratching but now I have the pleasure to present the solution I have come up with, as a contribution to the study of the defences, personal or otherwise, of the Knights of St. John in Rhodes.
